A Real Treat – A Spitfire

Imaging my joy and delight at hearing the sound of the Merlin Engine and knowing it was powering a Second World War Spitfire.  It is a sound that once heard, you can never forget.  Imagine also, the thrill of, not only watching this Great British War Bird go through its paces, but also being able to photograph it at the same time.

That is what happened yesterday evening, right outside my own front door.  You see, I live quite close to Imjin Barracks, home of the “Allied Rapid Reaction Corp” a NATO formation.  The  Officers Mess were holding their Summer Prom and the Spitfire display was one of the highlights of the evening.

Now the images are not brilliant, it was cloudy, the light was going and this beautiful lady was close but not close enough.  When I first saw her I had time to grab the nearest camera, a Nikon D5000 and a Sigma 70-200 Lens, then run outside.  Additionally, she would only show me her belly as she climbed up for another loop.  Still, I am pleased with what I got, and even more pleased that I watch her in all her glory as she looped over and over again.  Now I know she is War Bird but her grace, her charm, the sound of her engine and the way she moves, well, it is just spellbinding.
